Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins battling it out on Thursday Night Football set the stage for Week 4. Tons of yards and fireworks coming through the air this week. There is a new wave of young talent at the QB position that we have to keep an eye on. Breaking down Josh Rosen’s 1st career NFL start. He’s the 4th and final big name QB to make his first start behind Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield. Another sad day for kickers, costing 1 win and nearly another. Can Showtime Mahomes lead a 4th quarter comeback against the rival Broncos on Monday Night Football?
Goff and Cousins threw for 8 total TDs on Thursday Night, zero interceptions, and just under 900 yards. It was an absolute QB clinic. Any young QBs out there needed to watch this game. Balls were being thrown on a dime by both guys. The Rams offense right now is an absolute machine that isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. They have the league’s top offense. They had 3 Wide Receivers go over 100 yards receiving and they’re running back, Todd Gurley, had over 150 yards total and 1 TD. Robert Woods (5 rec. 101 yards, 1 TD), Cooper Kupp (9 rec. 162 yards, 2 TD), and Brandon Cooks (7 rec. 116 yards, 1 TD) all had monster games. Jared Goff is living in his Hollywood mansion laughing at Jeff Fisher right now.
Mitchell Trubisky has finally given the Bears fans something to cheer about. In search of their first franchise QB since Jim McMahon, Rex Grossman doesn’t count. The former No. 2 overall pick from North Carolina threw for 6 TD and zero interceptions against the Buccaneers. He has the Bears at 3-1 and on top of the nasty NFC North. That is primarily due to that great defense led by Khalil Mack. The Bears blew out the Buccs and forced Dirk Koetter to bench FitzMagic and put in Jameis Winston fresh off his suspension. They won 48-10.
Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans took down the defending champs Philadelphia Eagles. It took them into Overtime to do it but they got it done behind some late game heroics between Mariota and Wide Receiver Corey Davis. Mariota finished the game with 344 yards and 2 TD and 46 yards rushing 1 TD. In Overtime the Eagles marched down and had to settle for a field goal. Mariota took the field and connected with Corey Davis for a game-winning TD. The former 1st round pick finished with 9 catches for 161 yards and a TD. People forget the Titans actually won a playoff game a year ago. Not as big an upset as you would think.
The Chargers hosted the 49ers and new QB CJ Beathard. Jimmy G is out for the season with a torn ACL so Beathard is the next man up. Most people would have picked this to be a lopsided game but Beathard actually had pretty solid numbers and showed a great deal of toughness in the 4th quarter. He was 23 out of 37 for 298 yards, 2 TD, 2 interceptions. That wasn’t enough to take down the future hall of fame QB for the Chargers, Philip Rivers. The Chargers fell into a 14-0 hole early but fought back behind Rivers 3 TD game to win 29-27. Melvin Gordon has become the total package for the Chargers and he sets the tone. He rushed for over 100 yards and had 7 catches and a TD. Chargers Kicker Caleb Sturgis maybe looking for work soon after nearly costing them a win missing 2 extra point conversions and 1 FG. Chargers are used to getting off to bad starts so to finish 2-2 in the first month is definitely something to be proud about. Especially since the 2 losses were to the Rams and Chiefs.
The Texans were still searching for their first win of the season heading into Week 4. It also took them into Overtime to do it. They beat Andrew Luck and the Colts 37-34. Deshaun Watson lit it up throwing for 375 yards and 2 TD but also running for a TD. Deandre Hopkins went off for 169 yards on 10 catches. On the losing side, Andrew Luck played so well its sad he had to lose this game. He threw for 475 yards and 4 TD, zero interceptions. The Texans roster is way too talented to only have 1 win this year. Watch out for them to make some noise later in the season. Deshaun Watson and JJ Watt need to get this team rolling after this win.
Baker Mania is taking over Cleveland after that dramatic come from behind win on Thursday Night Football. Mayfield and the Browns put up 42 yards. Unfortunately, the defense gave up 45 points and they lost. On some very questionable calls. The Raiders needed help from the officials and some Overtime clock to get this win. It is very clear the NFL wanted Jon Gruden to get his first win but it came at the expense of the Browns. The Raiders defense is pathetic and can’t stop anyone. Derek Carr had a decent game but he also threw 2 interceptions. The Raiders offense needs to go through ‘Beastmode’ though. Marshawn Lynch returned to his youth to run over defenders to get 130 yards rushing. Derek Carr and the Raiders offense is a lot better when they can use the run to set up the pass.
Patrick Mahomes has breezed through the first 3 weeks of the season. He has yet to face an opposing fan base like the Mile High fans in Denver. The noise level was insane from start to finish. The fans in Denver didn’t let up all game long. Luckily for the Chiefs Mahomes has put up these numbers because the defense is not very good. They’ve allowed 27 points to the 49ers, 28 to the Chargers, and 37 to the Steelers. The throws Mahomes makes is incredible. He can throw it on the run so well. Showtime Mahomes was rolling away from the best past rusher in the game, arguably, Vonn Miller and threw it with his left hand to pickup a first down late in the game. The only way he doesn’t get sacked is if he threw it left-handed and he did that. This guy is the real deal. The Chiefs had to lean on Kareem Hunt. The Broncos relied heavily on a ground attack of two rookies, Philip Lindsay who is a local boy, and Royce Freeman who each had a TD. The Broncos led a 4th quarter comeback of their own. The Broncos picked up a 4th down but tried the hook and ladder coughing up the ball in the final seconds. The Chiefs stay undefeated as they beat the Broncos 27-23.
